Now that Q1 has wrapped up we want to share our quarterly round-up of which states issued the most dispensary/retailer licenses. We tallied 333 new dispensary/retailer licenses were issued in the quarter and New Jersey and Michigan each accounted for about 20% of the 333. In Q1 2023 there were 699 licenses issued.

Since we founded Cannabiz Media, we have often looked back to report on the licenses that had been issued by state, activity and status. In this post we are taking a look forward at jurisdictions that will “likely” be issuing tranches of new licenses in the coming year.

Now that 2023 has wrapped up we want to share our annual license round-up of which states issued the most dispensary/retailer licenses as well as trends that affect various parts of the value chain. In 2023 1,695 new dispensary and retailer licenses were issued and 4 states accounted for 60% of these licenses. This is well down from 2,750 in 2022 and 2,602 in 2021.

Here is our round-up of states that issued dispensary/retailer licenses in the 3rd quarter of 2023. So far this year we added 716 stores in Q1 2023; 471 in Q2 and just 361 in Q3. 5 states accounted for 69% of these Q3 licenses: New Jersey, Michigan, California, New Mexico, and Maine.

With Q2 2023 in the books we want to share our quarterly round-up of states that issued dispensary/retailer licenses. We ended 2022 with 2,750 licenses, with Q1 2023 adding 699. Q2 saw the addition of 587 – 16% fewer than the preceding quarter.

The US cannabis unlicensed market is estimated to be about $60 billion in sales – or more than twice the licensed market size of about $30 billion. Starting at the end of 2022, Cannabiz Media’s research team sought to find these unlicensed businesses and add them to the database. As the industry’s database of record, it was a gap that we thought needed filling.

Our 2022 recap showed that 2,750 licenses were issued, and four states accounted for 66% of the newly issued licenses in 2022. The first quarter of 2023 shows Oklahoma responsible for 47% of the 699 new licenses nationwide – despite their license “moratorium”.

Periodically, this blog checks in on new license counts throughout the value chain. For this post, we will evaluate what has been happening with dispensaries and retailers. According to the Cannabiz Media License Database, states have added 1,066 licenses in the first five months of 2022. Four states have issued 100 or more licenses with Oklahoma in the lead.

At the very end of 2021, the Ohio Board of Pharmacy received 1,462 applications for 73 dispensary licenses. The winners will be chosen by lottery in January 2022. Ohio is a limited license state and currently has 61 dispensaries around the state, so the addition of these news stores is significant and will assuredly be welcomed by the 231,165 registered patients in the state.

Dispensaries and retailers have continued to come online this year. We count 1,846 licenses issued through the end of August. Six states issued 100 or more licenses.

Through July 2020 new dispensaries and retailers continue to enter the marketplace. So far this year we have tracked 781. Those licenses represent an 11% increase from the 6,927 at the beginning of the year.

We are midway through 2020 and the industry has added 667 licenses this year. Those new licenses represent a 9.6% increase from the 6,927 at the beginning of the year. Twenty-one states have added at least one active license this year.

Through May 2020 the industry has added 554 licenses year to date with 88 in April and 77 in May. Those 554 represent an 8% increase from the 6,927 at the beginning of the year.

The first quarter of 2020 is over and retail & dispensary licenses have increased 5.5% with 385 new stores nationwide. Cannabiz Media tracked the newly active dispensary/retailer licenses from 18 states.
