Now that Q1 has wrapped up we want to share our quarterly round-up of which states issued the most dispensary/retailer licenses. We tallied 333 new dispensary/retailer licenses were issued in the quarter and New Jersey and Michigan each accounted for about 20% of the 333. In Q1 2023 there were 699 licenses issued.

Now that 2023 has wrapped up we want to share our annual license round-up of which states issued the most dispensary/retailer licenses as well as trends that affect various parts of the value chain. In 2023 1,695 new dispensary and retailer licenses were issued and 4 states accounted for 60% of these licenses. This is well down from 2,750 in 2022 and 2,602 in 2021.

Here is our round-up of states that issued dispensary/retailer licenses in the 3rd quarter of 2023. So far this year we added 716 stores in Q1 2023; 471 in Q2 and just 361 in Q3. 5 states accounted for 69% of these Q3 licenses: New Jersey, Michigan, California, New Mexico, and Maine.

The US cannabis unlicensed market is estimated to be about $60 billion in sales – or more than twice the licensed market size of about $30 billion. Our 2022 recap showed that 2,750 licenses were issued, and four states accounted for 66% of the newly issued licenses in 2022. The first quarter of 2023 shows Oklahoma responsible for 47% of the 699 new licenses nationwide – despite their license “moratorium”.

For this post, we will evaluate what has been happening with dispensaries and retailers. According to the Cannabiz Media License Database, states have added 1,066 licenses in the first five months of 2022. Four states have issued 100 or more licenses with Oklahoma in the lead.

At the very end of 2021, the Ohio Board of Pharmacy received 1,462 applications for 73 dispensary licenses. The winners will be chosen by lottery in January 2022. Ohio is a limited license state and currently has 61 dispensaries around the state, so the addition of these news stores is significant and will assuredly be welcomed by the 231,165 registered patients in the state.
