This week, Cannabiz Media dove deep into the Cannabiz Media License Database CRM tool in an effort to extrapolate the best day of the week and time of day to send email marketing messages to marijuana license holders based on sends from within the Cannabiz system.

The team analyzed data for the last 60 days across all states where medical and/or recreational marijuana is legal as well as specifically for the five states with the most licenses: Alaska, California, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington State.

One of the most interesting things the research team learned was that clients who used the Email Campaign tool within the Cannabiz Media License Database CRM saw a 33% higher open rate than clients who exported the email addresses and sent messages using their own system or a third party email marketing tool.

Overall, the data shows some useful insights that can help you improve the open rates of your email marketing messages to marijuana license holders.

Best Day to Send Email Marketing Messages across All States

According to the results from the hundreds of thousands of messages sent from the Cannabiz Media License Database, the best day of the week to send email marketing messages to marijuana license holders across all states is Monday with an open rate of 23.14%.

It’s important to point out that the open rates were actually higher on Saturday (43.33%) and Sunday (29.49%). However, the number of messages sent on weekends is significantly lower than the number of messages sent on weekdays, which means a longer look back period or inferential statistics is needed to draw meaningful conclusions. Therefore, the Cannabiz Media analysts advise that you use caution before considering Saturday or Sunday as the best day to send your email marketing messages to get the best results.

The chart below shows the open rates and click-through rates by day of the week for the past 60 days, so you can see how each day performed.

Timing Your Email Marketing for the Best Results

While the data in the chart above gives you a good starting point in planning your email schedule, the most important thing you can do to get the best results from your email marketing to marijuana license holders is to test, test, and test again! The reality is that email marketing success comes from ongoing experimentation, careful tracking of results, and understanding how to interpret and act on those results.

Furthermore, click-through rate (CTR) is included in chart in this article, but use it cautiously. There is no way of knowing if the content of the messages tracked in this research study was good enough to earn clicks. Cannabiz Media did not review message content for relevancy, quality, or any other factors for this analysis. If you write and send email marketing messages that your audience wants to receive, your open rate and your click through rate will improve.
