Data & Insights

After waiting for some late Oklahoma license renewals to settle, we wanted to show the growth in cultivation licenses over the last three years. As we shared throughout 2020, the license growth has primarily occurred in California and Oklahoma. They account for 70% of the active cultivation licenses in the US, up from 67% in 2019 and 51% in 2018.

Key Findings

  • Active cannabis cultivation licenses in the database finished 2020 at 18,169.
  • Oklahoma is currently the leader but California added 1,869 last year compared to 1,299 by OK.
  • Michigan added 322 licenses in 2020, putting it in third place with 529 total licenses.
