Now that Q1 has wrapped up we want to share our quarterly round-up of which states issued the most dispensary/retailer licenses. We tallied 333 new dispensary/retailer licenses were issued in the quarter and New Jersey and Michigan each accounted for about 20% of the 333. In Q1 2023 there were 699 licenses issued.

Now that 2023 has wrapped up we want to share our annual license round-up of which states issued the most dispensary/retailer licenses as well as trends that affect various parts of the value chain. In 2023 1,695 new dispensary and retailer licenses were issued and 4 states accounted for 60% of these licenses. This is well down from 2,750 in 2022 and 2,602 in 2021.

Here is our round-up of states that issued dispensary/retailer licenses in the 3rd quarter of 2023. So far this year we added 716 stores in Q1 2023; 471 in Q2 and just 361 in Q3. 5 states accounted for 69% of these Q3 licenses: New Jersey, Michigan, California, New Mexico, and Maine.

The November election is nearly a month away, and, like most recent years, there are implications for cannabis. Unlike the 2022 congressional midterms, which saw adult-use legalization on the ballot in five states, next month the only direct legalization opportunity will be before Ohio voters. Additionally, Virginia’s legislative election and a few special elections to fill Congress (US House) seats could have ramifications for the industry nationwide.

With Q2 2023 in the books we want to share our quarterly round-up of states that issued dispensary/retailer licenses. We ended 2022 with 2,750 licenses, with Q1 2023 adding 699. Q2 saw the addition of 587 – 16% fewer than the preceding quarter.

Now that Q1 has wrapped up, we want to share our quarterly round-up of which states issued the most dispensary/retailer licenses. Our 2022 recap showed that 2,750 licenses were issued, and four states accounted for 66% of the newly issued licenses in 2022. The first quarter of 2023 shows Oklahoma responsible for 47% of the 699 new licenses nationwide – despite their license “moratorium”.
