We are three quarters of the way through 2024 and 2,211 new licenses were issued in Q3. This was the strongest quarter of the year and was given a boost from new licenses in Ohio and New York.

In the last of our Q2 license recaps, we turn to manufacturing, the least volatile of the three activities we cover in these quarterly posts - cannabis manufacturing licenses are issued at a slower pace than cultivation or retail licenses but, unlike license assets, these brands can cross state lines and help well-established companies thrive and build market share.

Now that Q2 has wrapped up we want to share our quarterly round-up of which states issued the most dispensary/retailer licenses and get a sense of the number of stores in the US.

Following up on our recent overview of Q2 licensing, we now delve into the Q2 2024 cultivation licenses. These “census” snapshots derived from our Cannabiz Business Intelligence platform show where new licenses are being created.

We are past the midpoint of 2024 and it is time to review which states have added and dropped licenses in the second quarter. In our Q1 review, we highlighted the states that were accelerating their rollouts or trying to add an adult use program to a medical one. However, in Q2 we were inundated with programs in turmoil...

To some fanfare, Ohio pushed up their timeline for adult use cannabis to be made available in the state. Instead of a September 7th launch, the regulators approved 60 licenses soon after the window opened on June 7th. Some outlets reported that 62 licenses were issued but upon closer inspection, two had the same address as the regulator in downtown Cleveland and were labeled TEST. Best to ignore those. This post gives a breakdown on license types issued.

2023 was a unique year for cannabis licensing. The industry contraction continued with license counts dropping, fewer new licenses being issued, and Oklahoma’s moratorium finally took effect. This post will explore how things changed during the first quarter of 2024 and what the next few quarters may bring.

In the last of our Q1 license recaps, we turn to manufacturing, the least volatile of the three activities we cover in these quarterly posts - and as we see with other activities, most new licenses were issued by a handful of states.

Following up on our recent review of dispensaries and retailers, we now delve into the Q1 2024 cultivation licenses. These “census” snapshots derived from our Cannabiz Business Intelligence platform show where new licenses are being created. As a result of moratoriums and market pressures, the rate of adding new cultivation licenses is down in most jurisdictions.

Now that Q1 has wrapped up we want to share our quarterly round-up of which states issued the most dispensary/retailer licenses. We tallied 333 new dispensary/retailer licenses were issued in the quarter and New Jersey and Michigan each accounted for about 20% of the 333. In Q1 2023 there were 699 licenses issued.

Since we founded Cannabiz Media, we have often looked back to report on the licenses that had been issued by state, activity and status. In this post we are taking a look forward at jurisdictions that will “likely” be issuing tranches of new licenses in the coming year.

Cannabiz Media has been tracking license violations and product safety recalls as part of its market intelligence platform for nearly a decade. With years of industry data at our fingertips, our research team recently undertook an effort to organize and categorize compliance data into a cohesive, digestible tool: a violations and recalls dashboard. This post dives into that dashboard.

Organized labor is gaining traction within the cannabis space as some prominent union-friendly states also have high-value cannabis markets. We researched state and federal filings and press releases to compile the information on the 828 facilities that have either a union in place or a labor peace agreement.

We have reviewed the new store, cultivation, and manufacturing licenses issued through Q3 in a series of blog posts. In this post, we will highlight the overall trends and share details on license growth and contraction in key states.
