To some fanfare, Ohio pushed up their timeline for adult use cannabis to be made available in the state. Instead of a September 7th launch, the regulators approved 60 licenses soon after the window opened on June 7th. Some outlets reported that 62 licenses were issued but upon closer inspection, two had the same address as the regulator in downtown Cleveland and were labeled TEST. Best to ignore those. Wells Fargo Equity Research has released the Cannabis Cultivator Survey Edition 3 report based on data collected with Cannabiz Media in Spring 2023 through one of the most comprehensive outreach programs to cannabis cultivators. The third edition of the survey report includes new and updated data from cannabis cultivators in eight key states as well as comparisons to data reported in the Cannabis Cultivator Survey Edition 2 that was collected during Fall 2022 and released in February of this year.

The US cannabis unlicensed market is estimated to be about $60 billion in sales – or more than twice the licensed market size of about $30 billion. Starting at the end of 2022, Cannabiz Media’s research team sought to find these unlicensed businesses and add them to the database. After waiting for some late Oklahoma license renewals to settle, we wanted to show the growth in cultivation licenses over the last three years. As we shared throughout 2020, the license growth has primarily occurred in California and Oklahoma. They account for 70% of the active cultivation licenses in the US, up from 67% in 2019 and 51% in 2018.
